What is the Copyright Clearance Center?
The Copyright Clearance Center (CCC) is a not-for-profit service that provides authorization to photocopy material from a large repertoire of registered publications. Essentially, it operates as a broker between the rightsholder and the user of the copyrighted material. Its Academic Permissions Service (APS) program is designed specifically to deal with requests from the academic community. The University has established APS accounts with the CCC to facilitate copyright permission requests.
Why should I use the CCC instead of Barnes & Noble?
In some cases, securing copyright permissions directly through the CCC may be less expensive than going through Barnes & Noble. Barnes & Noble assesses a $1.25 per copy per article processing fee to each request it receives. The processing fee and the copyright permission fees are passed on to students in the price of the coursepack. For large coursepacks, the processing fees substantially increase the price charged to students.
In addition, securing copyright permissions directly through the CCC is often quicker than going through Barnes & Noble. In fact, Barnes & Noble uses the CCC to secure permissions, so going directly to the CCC avoids an additional processing step.
On the other hand, securing copyright permissions through Barnes & Noble is generally more convenient for the faculty.
How do I use the CCC to secure copyright permissions for coursepacks that will be sold to students?
How do I use the CCC to secure copyright permissions for materials that I will distribute to students at no charge?
