Dynamic eBooksThis column highlights ebooks that take full advantage of their digital format-- dynamic ebooks that move beyond just text and static images.
Thanks to several funding sources, including an LCLS/LSTA Planting the Seed grant, book artists and librarians, William Harroff and Charlotte Johnson, have created an electronic book digital gallery, entitled "(r)Evolutionary (e)Books: the Electronic Artwork of William Harroff." The purpose of the project "is to have participants never think of a book in the same way again and to realize the creative potential of the book in electronic form" (from press release). The project's website contains links to several dozen "bookworks" by visual artists, writers and poets, along with several electronic artwork pieces of William Harroff. Most of the "bookworks" can be viewed on an Internet browser, using various free audio, video and shockwave plugins, although some must be obtained on CD. The works range from examples of hypertext narratives to full multimedia presentations. (image used with permission © William Harroff 2001)
In conjunction with Jim Henson Studios, TumbleBooks is now offering an interactive Kermit the Frog storybook. By clicking on the screen, the reader helps Kermit search for his keys through the house. For a free preview, so to TumbleBooks' website.
The ebook contains an interactive wellness guide, as well as audio and video clips of author, Gary Null.
Interactive e-textbooks are becoming much more common, with the advantage that the student can move through the lessons at his/her own pace. Weseeco, a company focusing on engineering educational systems, has created several Authorware-based, university-level e-textbooks available on CD-Rom or as downloads. The e-textbooks include interactive, self-guided tutorials, supported by problem solving guides that can be used for employee training, desktop reference or in support of university courses. Titles currently include Interfacial Engineering Systems, Fluid Mechanics, Heat Transfer and Introduction to Adhesion.
