New Alliances and an Upgrade for Franklin's eBookMan

In a late October Press Release, Franklin announced that its collaboration with Microsoft in order to development a version of the Microsoft Reader for the eBookMan would be discontinued. Instead, Franklin has turned its focus to an alliance with MobiPocket, makers of the MobiPocket Reader and Web Companion. The bundling of the MobiPocket Reader increases the number of ebook titles available to the eBookMan by over 4,000, including several medical titles and numerous free, public-domain titles. Moreover, the MobiPocket Reader is capable of reading .txt, .htm, .html, .prc and .pdb, as well as Palm documents (Aportis doc format).

Franklin also announced the release of version 2.0 of the eBookMan's operating system. This upgrade includes an improved operating system and more storage space. In addition, the new release addresses the loss of not just content, but also the entire operating system, whenever the eBookMan's batteries run out. An optional Multimedia Card can serve as a back-up to restore the system and content when it is lost because of power failure.

Also included in the new release is version 1.5 of the Franklin Reader for ebooks. The new Reader includes the following features:

  • displays images within ebooks
  • process to search a word has been reduce to just a double tap on the word
  • faster scrollbar
  • remembers and resumes last position within a book
