1.
Did you have any difficulties using the digital audio book players?
2. What did you like
about listening to a book with this technology?
- Very clear sound
- It was nifty! I liked using the MP3 technology, the player
doesn't skip like a CD might and you can't get it stuck in your
tape deck. It is just a cool glimpse of the future.
- Size of the unit and the fact that there was the possibility
of having 2-3 books available.
- Everything
- Very portable- kept in pocket. Could listen to story while
I did my daily 40 minute walk.
- Portable. Low profile
- The size is great. The lack of cassettes to change is great.
- Very convenient during travel on plane with no cassettes to
change.
- Convenience.
- Compactness, comfortable ear phone while not conspicious.
- Compact. Great sound.
- Not having to change tapes or when away from home, not having
to carry the tapes with me.
- Didn't have to change tapes/CDs
3. What did you not like
about listening to a book with this technology?
- Had trouble with the bookmarks.
- The headphones- they were kind of cool at first but they kept
falling out. The book sounded better with my own headphones.
- Nothing
- Volume- needs to be lounder than maximum available. Could not
use with passenger in car as conversations were louder than device's
max volume. Display hard to learn to use and print on player was
too small
- I'm not sure I listened to the whole book- the display format
is a little confusing.
- Quality of sound.
- Difficulty with sound clarity.
- Faulty Rio.
- Quality of sound through the cassette adapter may be somewhat
less.
- Loops back to beginning of track requiring pushing FF and this
does not always work. Since this requires a free hand, defeats
advantage of portability. Did not care for audio ebook at all.
- Did not save where stopped. Hard to find where left off listening.
Cound not find bookmarks. Low batteries.
- There was nothing there that I didn't like. It took getting
used to though.
- The quality of the audio wasn't great. I had trouble if I wanted
to "rewind" to listen to the last few minutes.
4. In what ways is a
digital audio book better than a book on tape or CD?
- Small, no tape to keep changing
- DABs are better than CDs or tapes because it's easy to carry
around, but I think the player might be a little too complicated
for people unfamiliar with MP3 players
- Multiple books on one unit is an advantage.
- Smaller
- Smaller; no switching of tapes; possible to bookmark a digital
audio book but not a book on CD
- Smaller unit to carry around. I assume you use less batteries
which is pretty economical.
- Don't have to flip tapes.
- Convenience with no changing of tapes. Smaller size.
- Convenience, lack of changing tapes.
- Far superior sound quality. DAB better- can listen anywhere,
anytime. Easy to carry.
- I think that the digital is good in many ways, for I was able
to take it out with me and not have to carry the tapes with me.
- Easier to use-- less cumbersome
4a. In what ways is
the digital audio book not better?
- Much prefer books on CD, even books-on-tape is easier to deal
with
5. Given the option,
in what format would you want to listen to your next book?
digital audio book ___4___
book on tape __1___
book on CD ___2__
no preference __4___
Please explain why
Not sure.
CD: I liked them
both, but I would still prefer the book on CD because I know exactly
where I am in the book and how much listening time is involved.
DAB: It's easiest
to carry around because it is not a big box of tapes or CDs. It's
a convenient little Diamond Rio player.
Tape: Unless I took the time to get some hands-on help, I will
stick to books on tape
No preference: Whatever they have I like.
DAB: Ease of use outweighs poor sound quality
Tape: Sound is clearer.
No preference: Digital audio book while working at home, book
on tape while driving in my car
DAB: Convenience
6. How do you think
this technology can be improved?
- Better car adaptor
- 1) You should not be using alcohol wipes on any plastic components-
they will dry out and become suseptible to damage- I recommend
either advising patrons they can use their own headsets (as I
did), providing antibacterial/alcohol free wipes (hospital supply)
or providing disposable covers for the headsets. 2) The display
on the machine itself should show what part/chapter of the book
you are at rather than section1 or sections 2, etc. I am still
not sure I listened to the entire book- the running time should
be noted somewhere so you would have an idea that maybe you missed
something. 3) I think elderly people or people with visual impairments
would have a difficult time with the display size, the control
buttons and the labeling on the unit. 4) I would recommend a different
clip holder- possibly something padded and something that encloses
the unit completely-- as it is, it is very easy to drop and damage.
- Different headphone. I loved the tape deck adapter for the
car! Besides the headphones, the DAB is awesome, great technology.
- 1) provide higher volume. 2) clearer use instructions. 3) speeding
up access to titles on player so player can be loaded at circ.
desk by all desk staff.
- Longer checkout times- 2 books were downloaded but 3 weeks was
not enough time for me to listen to both.
- Better sound quality.
- Remove loop for tracks.
- Better audio quality-- even with a new battery the voices were
distored.
