The following survey was given
to all professors that had one or more netLibrary ebooks on reserves for
their Spring 2001 University of Rochester Courses. 4 surveys were returned
with the following responses:
|
1) Did the students ask you many questions about the ebooks
on reserve?
1a) If yes, what was the nature of their questions?
2) Do you believe that the use of ebooks altered students'
understanding or appreciation of the assigned material?
3) Did you yourself view the ebooks?
4) Should the Library continue to purchase ebooks for course
reserves when possible? Please explain.
- Yes. Our students commute to campus often from long distances.
They have difficulty finding time to visit the library - the eBook
allow them to decide when to do the assignment and save them time
and money.
- Most students seem to prefer "real" books, but enjoy the easy
access of eBooks.
- It seems like an excellent idea to me - aids in access to material.
If it was underused by students this semester my opinion is that
is only because it was new, and introduced once this semester
was already underway.
- Yes, I think so. It is a tremendous aid in making general reference
books like this one easily accessible. If it was not used by my
students this semester it was because I did not have the chance
to introduce it once the semester started ( it's easier if you
can plan these things ahead of time, make note on syllabus, introduce
in initial course orientation)
Additional Comments
- Are the books available permanently?
- Having the eBook does not substitute for the hard copy.
- I will definitely make more use of eBooks in future courses,
I will be able to direct students to them on syllabus and during
course orientation.
