        __2___ Yes _____ No __15___ Didn't use

3) Did you have any difficulties using the reader? __7__ Yes ___22__ No
        If yes, please explain.

    • Hard to figure out how to turn off first time (Rocket).  Confusion about what was under which menu item (Rocket).  Kept starting online/modem connection when I didn't intend to (SoftBook)
    • When reading outside, the text would grow dim and be difficult to read. (Rocket)
    • Too heavy, very unfriendly, navigation was a problem (SoftBook)
    • Difficult to read when laid flat on a table (SoftBook)
    • Turning it off and recharging-- I should have read instructions earlier (Rocket)
    • Clock of time remaining (on battery) was inconsistent-- said I had less time and jumped around.  Had to stop due to error message from which I could not recover. (SoftBook)
4) What did you like about reading with this technology?
    • Backlight allowed reading under poor light conditions; several books in one "package"; word search feature; I guess I also enjoyed it as a novelty-- I liked the SoftBook.  I also tried the Rocket that someone else had checked out.  While I guess it's nice having so many books in such a small package, I really did not like the Rocket.  Size and clarity of the SoftBook made reading much more enjoyable.  I'd like to read more on  SoftBook- would not want to read on the Rocket (SoftBook & Rocket)
    • Convenient (Rocket)
    • Makes me read faster; easy to figure out; I especially liked having more than 1 book to choose from (better titles more to my taste would be nice) (Rocket)
    • Backlighting; although didn't use, suspect ability to search and locate specific text would be useful; novelty (SoftBook & Rocket)
    • Read in the dark; many titles = one thing to carry and keep track of (Rocket)
    • Easily transportable; ability to load several books onto one readers; ability to read in dark room w/out light (Rocket)
    • I like reading with this technology because it saves you time for look for your book/page and all of it is there. (Rocket)
    • Trying something different (Rocket & SoftBook)
    • Many books in one package (SoftBook)
    • Flexibility in navigation; lighting built-in; abilities in mark-up; large font capability (SoftBook)
    • Not much at this stage of its evolution.  This technology needs to be expanded.  Right now its "just something new".  (SoftBook)
    • The ability to have more than one book (SoftBook)
    • Lightweight/ easy to hold in bed/ not too heavy (Rocket)
    • Novel, but books are better (Rocket)
    • Larger type (SoftBook)
    • Many books in one small package (Rocket)
    • I like the way you can make notes easily, highlight and erase (SoftBook)
    • Easy to read at night, change font size, easy to carry (Rocket)
    • Bigger lettering and the backlighting made it possible to read in badly lit areas (Rocket)
    • Easy to hold, bookmarks helpful, many titles (Rocket)
    • Easier to see at night, changing brightness of screens is convenient (SoftBook)
    • It has its own light.  It's easier to read than a hardback as its lighter as well.  The page turning is really useful because I read in bed and I'm always fumbling to turn pages as I'm afraid I'll mush them.  It's also really cool on the bus (SoftBook)
    • Device provides its own illumination, therefore easy to read in bed or in darkened room. Type is large and clarity is good. (SoftBook)
    • It was compact, self-lit and I didn't have to turn pages (SoftBook)
    • Zero eye strain, great for reading at night, generally fun (SoftBook)
    • It's an ebook (which is awesome) but the longer battery and smaller size (compared to the SoftBook) made it even more comfortable than a hardback.  I'm not ready to throw all paperbacks out the window, but I'm close.  The stand is a great idea (Rocket)
    • Lighted screen for reading in dark (Rocket)
    • Great for our camp where we have no electricity.  Otherwise, I don't see much real advantage (SoftBook)
    • Backlight for lounging while reading (Rocket)
    • Backlit.  Night reading (Rocket)
    • I liked being able to read in the dark (SoftBook)
    • Could read in all kinds of light.  Book kept place (where I) left off.  Key term search (SoftBook)
5) Did you read a complete book? __20___ Yes __12___ No
        If no, why not?
    • Lost interest in the book and never went back
    • Not enough time (3)
    • Content was not of sufficient interest
    • Time limit and cheesy book
    • Because the books on it were not too good
    • Ran out of time
    • Research
    • Too long.  Not enough time.
    • I was just curious about the ebook and none of the books were of interest to me anyway.
6) What types of material would you be most likely to read or consult on an ebook?

      • general interest periodicals

      • professional interest
      • foreign-language phrase book (interactive)
      • magazines
7) Given the option, in what format would you want to read your next book?
__11___ ebook         ___12__paper or hardback book    __9___ no preference         Why?
    • eBook
      • Easy to carry and hold (Rocket)
      • Read in the dark and can hold many titles (Rocket)
      • For more evaluation of the technology (SoftBook)
      • I think it is much more fun and easier than a paperback or hardcover book (Rocket)-
      • I liked the text format larger print (SoftBook)
      • It's better for my eyes with the lighting and the larger print (Rocket)
      • People think its funky!!! I guess a status thing (Rocket)
      • I loved it, it was so easy to use (SoftBook)
      • If I could get the titles I wanted-- 1.  multiple titles on device; 2. nifty-- got attention in public (SoftBook)
    • Paper or Hardback Book
      • While I usually read 2-3 books at the same time, it's difficult to stay into any ebook selection because the titles I read aren't what on this ebook.  How that would change if this were my personal ebook with my purchased titles, I don't know (Rocket)
      • Ink on paper is easier for the eyes (Rocket & SoftBook)
      • Less fragile and lighter (Rocket & SoftBook)
      • Easier
      • Because there is no good content on ebook (Rocket)
      • Accustomed, though the ebook was not at all as difficult as anticipated (SoftBook)
      • Ebook a little too heavy, though it would be OK for reading at home.  Ironically, it is not quite as portable as a print book (SoftBook)
      • Classic, battery doesn't die, don't have to worry about breaking it (SoftBook)
      • Lighter, tougher, less likely to be stolen from car (SoftBook)
      • Easier to read, won't break (Rocket)
    • No Preference
      • Would depend on the situation (Rocket)
      • Ebook especially appealing for raveling or for quick reads of titles I don't care to own (SoftBook)
      • The light always annoys me, that is why I would probably read a paperback, but I like ebooks (SoftBook)
      • Not enough ebook titles yet available (Rocket)
      • Not too many titles available on the ebook format yet (SoftBook)
      • It depends-- there are situations for both.  Charging the ebook in Europe was a problem (Rocket)
      • Based on availability (Rocket)
8) How do you think this product could be improved?
    • Select which books are loaded, then a longer check-out so I could read them all (SoftBook)
    • Library-wise, not sure.  It was a novelty and curiosity for me but surprisingly it didn't hold me because it felt like working on a computer-- which I don't do for relaxation.  My computer use is work or to find specific info (goal oriented); therefore, the leisure end was harder to adapt to for me-- generational problem likely.  This product itself is fine (a bit heavy after holding it a while) (Rocket)
    • Better selection
    • Lighter weight (Rocket)
    • Too heavy (SoftBook)
    • Sound for people who are blind and/or illiterate (Rocket)
    • Have optional audio (Rocket & SoftBook)
    • Needs to be more of a laptop; more of an information/data processor.  The design is good and better than the Rocket.  The battery charge time needs to be improved.  (SoftBook)
    • Lighter weight.  Auto pageturning feature with variable speed settings.  Graphic capabilities.  Larger storage to accommodate more content. (Rocket & SoftBook)
    • Improve outdoor reading (Rocket)
    • Improve paper introductions as to how to operation and get best quality image.  Paper instructions as to how to download free full-text materials from the Internet on the ebook.  How to know at what point it would be necessary to re-charge the battery.  (SoftBook)
    • Nothing at this time (SoftBook)
    • Better content (Rocket)
    • Smaller (SoftBook)
    • More information about titles before having to read the book itself (Rocket)
    • Lighterweight- I hear the newest version is about 2 lbs.  Better more obvious way to go to a particular page (SoftBook)
    • Lighter.  Takes too long to recharge battery (Rocket)
    • Longer loan periods so that a lengthy book could be comfortably read.  The rocket short-cut feature should be better explained, though I worked it just fine (Rocket)
    • Smaller size-- I like the Rocket better (SoftBook)
    • Size- Rocket is a good size, SoftBook too big.  Needs longer battery life (Rocket)
    • Sometimes the glare on the screen was unavoidable- sometimes it was annoying.  Also, I only read a 57 page book and the battery ran out before I was finished. (SoftBook)
    • Its heavy.  I wonder if it needs to be as big as it is?  Would it be much harder to read? (SoftBook)
    • Make it more lightweight, longer battery life (SoftBook)
    • The only irritant was that the larger font made the page viewed so small that one had to turn pages every 2 sec. which was a bit intrusive.  And the reduced font was too reduced.  Perhaps a middle font also?  And a way to go to the next page using the stylus, not just previous page.  (Rocket)
    • More titles.  Maybe all of one author's works on one book or stuff in the same series. (SoftBook)
    • Update the magazine issues and more popular fiction.  None of the books really interested me at all (SoftBook)
    • Lighter.  Let reader choose from total stock of books (SoftBook)
    • Keep box @ checkout desk (Rocket)
    • Lighter weight.  More graphics (Rocket)
    • Longer battery life; clear for all bookmarks; graphics; lighter weight; ability to download text from the web (SoftBook)
